Governor Convenes Special Session on Public Safety as Senator Brantley’s Car is Burglarized
DEMING – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has convened a special legislative session starting today at noon to address urgent public safety issues. The governor’s call to action comes amid ongoing crime and other public safety challenges that highlight the critical need for legislative response. Governor Lujan Grisham emphasized her openness to compromise, urging lawmakers to come together and work with her on behalf of all New Mexicans. The session can be live-streamed on the legislature’s web page at nmlegis.gov by searching for “live stream.”
In a striking incident, Senator Crystal Diamond Brantley reported on her official Facebook page that her car was vandalized and burglarized just feet from her casita on the morning of the special session’s opening day. Among the stolen items was a handgun. This occurred in what is considered the “nice” part of Santa Fe.
Responding to a Facebook remark by a citizen, Senator Brantley said, “My vehicle is an extension of my home, where I keep a locked handgun. Had they entered my home, they would’ve been met with another handgun. In rural areas, we are prepared to defend ourselves in situations where emergency responders cannot. Blaming crime victims for the theft is exactly why New Mexico is in the state of criminal chaos we see today. It’s time to demand personal responsibility and demand consequences for those who break the law.
