Foot Chase Leads to Gunfire Incident in Deming
DEMING – The Luna County Sheriff’s Department initiated a traffic stop on Edward Richmond III on Popular Street when Richmond suddenly fled on foot. The Deming Police Department quickly joined the pursuit, which moved near the BMX race park.
As the chase intensified, Richmond allegedly contacted his girlfriend, Hailey Shatswell, 22, seeking assistance while hiding in mesquite bushes. Police Captain Jose Montoya informed Deming Radio News that Shatswell armed herself with a 9mm handgun and drove a black Ford F-250 to the Rainbow Park area, where she began discharging the weapon.
Officers eventually located Richmond in the brush. Deming Detectives apprehended Shatswell, who admitted during questioning that her gunfire was intended to divert the officers’ attention away from Richmond. Shatswell has been charged with shooting at or from a motor vehicle.
At this time, it remains unclear whether Richmond was formally arrested or cited into court.
