Capitan Man Killed in Home Invasion
DEMING – New Mexico State Police responded to a fatal home invasion on July 28, 2024, in Capitan. At around 4:30 a.m., four individuals arrived at a residence.
Benisha Shanta, 33, of Capitan, knocked on the door. When the door opened, Daniel Hernandez, 29, Gabriel Thyberg, 41, and Samuel Rey Duran, 30, all of Roswell, entered wearing masks and clothing marked “RPD” and “POLICE.”
Armed with rifles, they announced themselves as law enforcement. Inside, they shot and killed 44-year-old Nathan Ogden, stole money and narcotics, and fled. Ogden’s girlfriend was unharmed.
Shanta was arrested in El Paso on August 5, charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy. Hernandez was arrested in Roswell the next day, facing similar charges along with impersonating an officer. Thyberg was arrested in Albuquerque on August 9, and Duran, also in Albuquerque, was arrested on August 30, charged with murder, armed robbery, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His girlfriend, Angela Montoya, 27, was also arrested for firearm possession.
