DEMING – A new exhibition titled Meandro is now open at the WNMU Francis McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art in Silver City, featuring works by Assistant Professor of Sculpture Erin Monet Wheary.
The exhibition includes a large-scale collaborative drawing, photographs, and cyanotypes. Wheary drew inspiration from the Magdalena River in Santa Cruz de Mompox, Colombia, where she completed an artist’s residency. She described the installation as “an homage to the power of the river” and its ability to shape landscapes over time.
Expressive arts major Charlee Alexander, who attended the opening reception, praised Wheary’s ability to immerse viewers in her Colombian experience, calling the work cohesive and noting the creative use of Polaroids and cyanotypes.
Prior to the opening, Wheary gave an artist’s talk, explaining her process and sharing visuals from her residency. Chemistry major Anastacia Armijo said the talk gave her a deeper understanding of the work, describing it as intimate and rooted in the artist’s “in the moment” experience.
Meandro will be on display at the McCray Gallery in Silver City until October 3. The gallery is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
