DEMING – On October 10, 2024, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested by the Roswell Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting (OIS) involving one of its officers.
State Police agents learned that at approximately 11:34 a.m., the Chaves County Metro Narcotics Task Force identified Jason Torres, 41, as being in possession of illegal narcotics and firearms. When task force agents attempted a traffic stop, Torres briefly complied before fleeing in a vehicle and then on foot, armed with a rifle. At the intersection of South Main Street and the Roswell Relief Route, a Roswell Police officer fired at least one shot, striking Torres, who later succumbed to his injuries. No law enforcement officers were injured.
Additionally, a Chaves County Sheriff’s deputy responding to the incident was involved in a crash with a commercial vehicle. The deputy sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the commercial vehicle was uninjured. The crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Uniform Bureau.
