DEMING – DAGSHIP Rescue in Luna County is celebrating the growing success of its inmate-led dog training program at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. Known as Project Rise, the initiative is helping dogs and inmates alike while expanding opportunities for pet adoptions.
Fourteen months into the program, 15 dogs have participated, with 10 adopted, one currently in foster care, and four actively undergoing training. The program has opened new avenues for adoption, with one dog finding a home with a corrections officer and another being adopted by an inmate’s family.
“This program benefits everyone involved—from the dogs to the inmates and the families who welcome these animals into their homes,” a DAGSHIP Rescue representative told KDEM News.
Organizers say Project Rise demonstrates how second chances can make a difference for both people and animals.
