DEMING – Former President Jimmy Carter, who served as the nation’s 39th president from 1977 to 1981, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia. Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and global humanitarian, redefined the post-presidency role with his work promoting democracy, human rights, and public health through The Carter Center, which he founded in 1982.
Carter’s presidency was marked by achievements like the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, but economic challenges and the Iran hostage crisis led to his 1980 defeat. Post-White House, he facilitated peace talks, monitored elections worldwide, and championed causes like eradicating the guinea worm disease.
In a statement, The Carter Center said he passed peacefully, surrounded by family. President Joe Biden called him “a man of faith, love, and action whose impact will endure.”
Carter is remembered for his humility and steadfast commitment to service, a legacy spanning nearly a century. Services will include a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
