WNMU Seeks Funding for Green Energy Upgrades

DEMING – Western New Mexico University is making a bold move toward sustainability, requesting $15 million from the state Legislature to upgrade infrastructure and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

Currently, WNMU utilizes solar energy from PNM’s Community Solar Direct program, along with on-campus photovoltaic panels. Plans are in place to expand solar power generation through new carports and freestanding panels.

Assistant Vice President of Facilities and Operations Kevin Matthes told KDEM News that the university is preparing for the future. “With the federal goal of 50% electric vehicle sales by 2030, WNMU is working to ensure our campus has the infrastructure needed to support that transition.”

The funding request would allow WNMU to modernize power and water systems, increase energy efficiency, and add EV charging stations, which are currently available to the public for free. Officials say these efforts will keep WNMU at the forefront of sustainability in New Mexico.
