DEMING – Western New Mexico University is taking a significant step toward addressing food insecurity on campus with plans for a 48-by-70-foot greenhouse. The project is part of the university’s Food Security and Sustainability initiative and aims to provide fresh produce while serving as a hands-on learning space for students.
To fund the construction, WNMU is seeking $250,000 from the New Mexico Legislature. The need for such an initiative is evident—according to the 2023 Basic Needs Project assessment by the University of New Mexico, 68% of WNMU students and 50% of faculty and staff reported experiencing food insecurity.
Beyond supplying fresh, nutritious food, the greenhouse will allow students to gain experience in sustainable agriculture, including planting and harvesting crops right on campus.
