WNMU McCray Gallery to Showcase Artist-in-Residence Exhibition

DEMING – The Francis McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art at Western New Mexico University is set to host its first-ever exhibition by an Artist-in-Residence, featuring the work of Elizabeth Gerdeman. Her solo exhibition, A Weather Eye, explores meteorology with a blend of wit, compassion, and curiosity.

Gerdeman, a graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design and Ohio State University, is known for her multidisciplinary approach. Her work often examines humanity’s conflicting perceptions of nature, using mixed-media paintings and site-specific installations.

During her residency, Gerdeman integrated local resources and weather lore into her artistic practice, incorporating native plant dyes, found materials, and natural elements like air, sunlight, and rainwater. “I wanted to experiment with new artistic research formats and engage with the Silver City community in ways that deepen the connection between art and environment,” she said.

McCray Gallery Director Jill Winburn called the exhibition a milestone for the Expressive Arts Department. “Elizabeth has been an invaluable guest lecturer, inspiring students with new perspectives on their artistic journeys. This show is an exciting first for WNMU,” she said.

A Weather Eye will be on display at the McCray Gallery from March 20 through April 10, 2025. The exhibition opens with an artist’s talk at 6 p.m. on March 20 in Light Hall Auditorium, followed by a reception at the gallery.
