DEMING – Captain Jose “Pepe” Montoya of the Deming Police Department successfully completed the demanding David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge, demonstrating remarkable endurance and mental resilience.
The challenge required Montoya to run four miles every four hours over a span of 48 hours, covering a total of 48 miles. Pushing through exhaustion, injury, and sleep deprivation, he maintained a steady nine-minute-mile pace throughout the event.
“The purpose of this challenge for me was to find my new 100%,” Montoya said. “I wanted to test my ability, my body, and my mental toughness. Running 4 miles every 4 hours for two days straight was incredibly difficult. My body was fatigued, injured, and sleep-deprived. I had to summon mental strength I didn’t know I had.”
Montoya’s motivation extended beyond personal achievement. With three of his five children serving in the military, he aimed to show them that perseverance can overcome any challenge. “I wanted to remind them that no matter what life throws at you—or what’s happening in the world—we can overcome anything if we set our minds to it,” he said.
The captain credited his family, particularly Erica and Emma, for their support throughout the challenge.
City officials and community members praised Montoya’s dedication, calling his effort an inspiration to Deming. “Captain Montoya’s perseverance reflects the heart of our police department—strong, determined, and willing to rise to any challenge,” officials said in a statement.
His accomplishment stands as a testament to the power of determination and the unyielding spirit of the Deming community.
