NMSP Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting Involving U.S. Marshals in Clovis

CLOVIS, NM – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, June 16, 2025, involving members of the United States Marshals Service (USMS).

According to initial reports, U.S. Marshals were attempting to apprehend 24-year-old Eric Gallagher, who was wanted on a probation violation warrant. Marshals had identified a residence at 2213 Echols Avenue in Clovis as a location Gallagher was known to frequent. When officers approached the home and began speaking with the occupants, Gallagher fled on foot, prompting a chase through a nearby alley.

During the pursuit, Marshals deployed their department-issued tasers in an effort to stop Gallagher. At some point during the chase, Gallagher reportedly brandished a firearm. In response, two Marshals discharged their firearms, striking him. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, and Gallagher was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.

The names of the involved Marshals have not been released. Questions regarding their duty status or administrative actions should be directed to the U.S. Marshals Service.

New Mexico State Police agents are currently gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and working to determine the sequence of events. Their findings will be presented to the district attorney’s office for legal review. NMSP clarified that it does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified; that decision lies solely with the district attorney.

This incident remains under active investigation.
