Courthouse evacuated after reported threat; investigation underway

DEMING – The Luna County Historic Courthouse was evacuated early Wednesday morning, July 9, following a report of a possible threat. County officials quickly activated emergency protocols, and the building was cleared as a precaution.

At 8:10 a.m., Luna County issued an alert through its official emergency system, notifying the public that the courthouse would remain closed until noon. The message advised, “The Luna County Courthouse will open at noon (Wednesday) due to reports of threats. Please avoid the Courthouse area.”

Luna County Manager Chris Brice confirmed to KDEM/KOTS News that he personally ordered the evacuation after receiving the initial report and immediately notified the New Mexico State Police. State authorities assumed control of the evacuation process and conducted a thorough inspection of the premises.

By noon, the building was deemed safe and reopened to the public. No specific details regarding the nature of the threat have been released, and the case remains under investigation.
