DEMING – Prescription drug prices remain a major concern for families across New Mexico, and state officials say relief may be on the way. The New Mexico Health Care Authority has opened bidding for new vendors to manage prescription benefits for more than 168,000 public employees and their families.
The move is being pitched as a way to bring real savings to households struggling with the high cost of medications. By pooling the buying power of teachers, state workers, and other public employees, officials say the state can negotiate better deals and force more transparency in pricing.
Community pharmacies, which often serve as the most accessible point of care in rural towns, are also expected to benefit if the state chooses vendors that prioritize local support. Advocates hope this process not only cuts costs but also helps stabilize pharmacy access for families outside major cities.
Proposals are due November 3, and state leaders say the focus will be on affordability, improved service, and fairness to both patients and local pharmacies. For more information, details are available through the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority at nmpsia.com.
