Police Investigate Shots Fired Near NM 418

DEMING – Two incidents of shots fired near NM 418 and West Ash Street are under investigation by the Deming Police Department, and both are believed to be related. According to a story written by Billy Armendariz with the Deming Headlight, the first incident was reported just after midnight on Saturday near the intersection of Ash Street and NM 418, also known as the Old Lordsburg Highway.

Witnesses told police they saw a black four-door sedan leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Officers were unable to locate the vehicle.

Later that day, police responded to a second report of gunfire in the 1400 block of West Ash Street. Witnesses reported hearing several popping sounds and said that occupants of a white Chrysler 300 and a Chevrolet Silverado appeared to be shooting at one another.

Deming Police located the white Chrysler on Hermanas Road southwest of town and approached it tactically. The vehicle was unoccupied. Officers tracked foot impressions for nearly two miles through desert brush before the trail ended, leading investigators to believe the suspect was likely picked up.

The vehicle’s registration led police to a residence where a possible suspect was questioned at the police department. However, officials with the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office determined there was not enough evidence at that time to file charges.

Shell casings recovered from the scene indicate a 9mm automatic weapon may have been used. Because of the possible use of an automatic firearm, Deming Police investigators are expected to meet with a multi-agency group that includes the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police believe both shooting incidents are connected.
