State Police to Conduct January 2026 Checkpoints and Patrols Across New Mexico

DEMING – New Mexico State Police will step up traffic enforcement efforts in Deming and across Luna County during January 2026 as part of a statewide initiative that includes sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and driver’s license checkpoints.

Although the enforcement campaign will take place in all 33 counties throughout New Mexico, State Police say particular emphasis will be placed on communities such as Deming and Luna County, where visibility and public awareness can have a significant impact on roadway safety.

The January enforcement effort is intended to reduce impaired driving-related crashes and fatalities through continued media attention and intensive public awareness efforts. Officials say these checkpoints and patrols help change attitudes about driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and encourage safer decision-making behind the wheel.

State Police note that hundreds of lives could be saved each year if drivers consistently chose not to drive while impaired. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, and follow all traffic laws.

Funding for the enhanced enforcement is provided through the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division, which offers overtime grant funding to support traffic safety enforcement, training, education, and equipment in high-risk areas statewide. The partnership strengthens efforts to improve road safety across New Mexico communities.

Drivers in Deming and throughout Luna County are reminded to expect an increased law enforcement presence during January and to help support the effort to end impaired driving.
