NMSP Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting with Deming Police
DEMING – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is looking into an officer-involved shooting involving the Deming Police Department on September 14, 2024.
The incident began around 4:30 a.m. when a Deming Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Kassandra Castro for careless driving. Castro did not stop, leading to a pursuit that ended when she drove through a barbed wire fence and became stuck near Highway 11.
As the officer approached, Castro managed to free the vehicle and drove toward him. The officer fired at least one round from his weapon, but Castro was unharmed. She surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Castro was booked into the Luna County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated fleeing from law enforcement, and had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a dangerous drugs charge.
The Deming Police officer involved has not been identified, and for information regarding his duty status, authorities advise contacting the Deming Police Department.
The New Mexico State Police continues to investigate and will present their findings to the district attorney, who will determine if the officer’s actions were justified.
