Dona Irwin – Former NM State Representative District 32
DEMING – New Mexico is mourning the loss of beloved former State Representative Dona Irwin, who passed away on October 10 at the age of 92. A dedicated public servant, Irwin represented House District 32, which includes Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna counties, for 18 years, from 1999 to 2017. Known for her strong work ethic and commitment to addressing the needs of her constituents, she was a respected voice in the state legislature, particularly for the farming and ranching communities she served.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her condolences, recalling Irwin as “a stalwart advocate for New Mexico’s children, families, and rural communities.” The governor highlighted Irwin’s efforts to link the state’s agricultural heritage with educational opportunities, particularly through her work with the Cooperative Extension Service and programs like 4-H. She also noted Irwin’s commitment to rural senior centers, calling her a true champion for New Mexico’s rural communities.
Born in Silver City, Irwin’s life was deeply rooted in southern New Mexico. Before her time in the legislature, she worked as a teacher at Columbus Elementary School, a marketing officer at First New Mexico Bank, and served as a Luna County Commissioner from 1982 to 1986. Her long-standing community involvement included active membership in organizations like BorderBelles, supporting New Mexico’s beef industry.
Irwin’s passing comes just three days after the death of her fellow legislator, former State Senator John Arthur Smith. The House Democratic leadership remembered Irwin as a devoted representative who “poured her heart into her service” and left a lasting impact on the lives of those she served.
Further details about the cause of death have not been released.
