DEMING – Recent wastewater analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranks New Mexico among four states with very high levels of COVID-19, alongside Arizona, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.
According to state health officials, COVID levels in wastewater have been rising since early November. Wastewater monitoring is a key tool in detecting viruses, often before symptoms appear or hospital visits occur.
Officials noted that while COVID levels are high, they remain far below the peaks of the pandemic, describing the current increase as a normal winter bump rather than a major surge.
Health officials encourage vaccination, reminding residents that flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available for anyone six months and older. Public health offices also offer free vaccines for uninsured individuals. For more information, contact the New Mexico Department of Health in Deming at 575-546-2771.
