DEMING – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred yesterday in Hobbs, NM.

Authorities report that two State Police officers attempted to stop a white Dodge Charger driven by 28-year-old Jesus Rubio of Las Cruces. Rubio initially failed to stop but eventually pulled over.

When he exited his vehicle, Rubio kept his right hand behind his back and ignored commands to show his hands. He then raised his arms as if pointing a firearm while approaching the officers.

Both officers discharged their weapons, striking Rubio. He was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. No firearm was recovered at the scene, and no officers were injured.

The officers are on administrative leave pending the investigation, which will be reviewed by the district attorney.
