WNMU President to Fight Lawsuit Over $1.9M Payout

DEMING – Western New Mexico University President Joe Shepard, preparing to step down after leading the university since 2011, announced he will challenge the state attorney general’s lawsuit to recover his $1.9 million severance package.

Shepard, who will resign Wednesday, addressed the campus community, emphasizing that while his contract is under litigation, the university’s financial health remains strong, with its budget growing from $800,000 to $12 million. He also reflected on his tenure, highlighting achievements like campus solar panels and water conservation. Shepard expressed confidence that his legacy will endure beyond his resignation.
