Deming School Board Approves Cellphone Ban, Accepts Superintendent’s Resignation

DEMING, N.M. — The Deming Public School Board met in regular session Thursday evening, approving all monetary requests and implementing a new policy prohibiting students from using cellphones during school hours.

The board also convened in a closed executive session to discuss limited personnel matters, including the acceptance of Superintendent Vicki Chavez’s resignation. Chavez, who has led the district through post-pandemic recovery, expressed pride in her team’s accomplishments during her tenure.

In an interview with KDEM News, Chavez said she was “very happy with the results” achieved by her and her staff since the district began recovering from COVID-19 closures. She emphasized that data tracking the district’s progress is available for public viewing on the district’s website. Chavez confirmed her last day with the district will be March 31.
