DEMING – Deming Animal Guardians, a longtime champion of animal welfare in Luna County, is in the running to receive up to $5,000 from the national nonprofit organization Unwanted Animals. The potential funding could cover nearly half of the group’s monthly veterinary expenses—and community members can help secure the support.
Supporters are encouraged to visit unwantedanimals.org/nominate-a-charity and submit a nomination for Deming Animal Guardians. The more nominations the group receives, the better its chances of being selected for funding.
Founded 34 years ago, Deming Animal Guardians has sponsored more than 17,000 spay and neuter surgeries, dramatically reducing stray animal populations in the region. The volunteer-based, no-kill rescue is known for its hands-on work and community outreach, including:
- Offsite adoption events to help pets find forever homes,
- Support to smaller no-kill shelters experiencing overflow,
- An emergency pet food bank for local families in need,
- And a prison training program pairing rescue dogs with incarcerated individuals to provide obedience training and companionship.
Organizers say a grant from Unwanted Animals would be a game-changer for the nonprofit.
“This kind of support helps us keep our promise to the animals and to the people who rely on us,” a spokesperson for Deming Animal Guardians said.
Nominations are open now, and the organization urges local residents to help spread the word.
