DEMING – Luna County has announced an immediate end to its facility rental fee waiver program, citing concerns about fairness, administrative burden, and long-term sustainability. Effective immediately, all users of County-owned facilities will be required to pay standard rental fees in accordance with the existing schedule.
In a statement released Monday by the Luna County Planning Department, officials said the decision was made to improve consistency and ensure equal treatment of all applicants.
“While in the past we have accepted fee waiver requests in an effort to assist local organizations and individuals, this practice has resulted in inconsistent application, increased administrative burden, and perceptions of inequity,” the statement reads.
The waiver program, which allowed certain community groups or individuals to request exemption from rental costs, had been in place for several years. Officials now say it has outlived its practicality and created challenges in maintaining transparency and fairness.
Going forward, all facility rentals—such as community centers, fairgrounds spaces, or other County-owned buildings—will require full payment of applicable fees. These charges help cover maintenance, staffing, and general upkeep.
“As a public entity, Luna County is committed to supporting our community in a fair, transparent, and fiscally responsible manner,” the County said. “These fees are necessary to ensure continued access and service for everyone.”
