Sick Bald Eagle Found in Silver City Now Under Care at El Paso Zoo

SILVER CITY – The El Paso Zoo is caring for a sick bald eagle that was rescued in Silver City, New Mexico.

According to a report by CBS-4 in El Paso, the El Paso Zoo said its veterinary team is treating the bald eagle after the bird was found thin and anemic. In a social media post, zoo officials said the eagle is undergoing medical evaluations to determine the cause of its condition.

Zoo officials said the bird is being tested for possible infections, including avian influenza, and is also being screened for toxic lead levels. Despite its weakened state, the zoo confirmed the bald eagle did not suffer any broken bones.

While awaiting test results, the veterinary team said it will continue to care for and feed the eagle as part of its rehabilitation efforts. In the same social media post, the El Paso Zoo thanked the Gila Wildlife Rescue team and the good Samaritan who first reported the injured bird.

As 2025 comes to a close, the El Paso Zoo reported that its wildlife rehabilitation program has treated 122 sick, injured, or orphaned birds of prey over the past year.
