DEMING – The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) is investigating a second erroneous inmate release within a month. Bernalillo County officials stated on Friday that a “human error” resulted in the release of an inmate on Wednesday, who was supposed to be transferred to pretrial services before his release. This transfer was not completed before his discharge. MDC officials reached out to the inmate to inform him of his outstanding release conditions, and he reportedly returned to fulfill the remaining requirements.
On July 10, MDC officials discovered that Anthony James Jaramillo had been released a week earlier than intended. This error was brought to their attention by Metro Court officials. Jaramillo faces a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, and law enforcement was actively seeking to return him to custody.
In response to these incidents, MDC officials announced an “exhaustive review” of their inmate release policies and procedures. They have also implemented a new protocol, effective immediately, requiring a second release check for all inmates.
The MDC’s Office of Professional Standards is conducting an investigation into these incidents. “Once the investigation concludes, necessary policy adjustments will be implemented to enhance increased accuracy in the inmate release process,” officials stated in a news release issued on Friday.
