DEMING – Drivers in Deming and across Luna County will see an increased law enforcement presence throughout May as the New Mexico State Police roll out sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols statewide, covering all 33 counties.
The effort includes not only DWI checkpoints, but also enforcement focused on driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, and insurance compliance. Officials say the goal is simple: reduce impaired driving and save lives.
Law enforcement agencies across New Mexico will be working extended hours, funded in part through grants from the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division. Those funds support overtime, training, education, and equipment in areas identified as higher risk for crashes and impaired driving.
State officials emphasize that public awareness is a key part of the campaign, with increased messaging and visibility aimed at changing attitudes about driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Authorities say impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths on New Mexico roads, and stress that making the decision not to drive impaired can have life-saving consequences.
The statewide campaign is part of the ongoing “ENDWI” initiative, which encourages drivers to plan ahead, use a designated driver, or find alternative transportation if they have been drinking.
Motorists in Deming and throughout New Mexico are urged to expect delays at checkpoints and to drive safely as enforcement efforts continue through the month of May.
