DEMING – Graduates from across southwest New Mexico, including students from Deming and Luna County, will be recognized this week as Western New Mexico University prepares for its Spring 2026 commencement ceremony.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will serve as keynote speaker as the university honors hundreds of students earning certificates, associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. The ceremony will include graduates attending both in person and virtually from around the world.
Commencement is scheduled for Friday, May 8th at 5:00 p.m. on the Silver City campus at Ben Altamirano Field. Due to expected crowds, gates will open early at 3:00 p.m.
The event will also be streamed online, allowing family and friends to watch remotely.
University leadership, including Interim President Dr. Chris Maples and incoming President Dr. Jose Coll, will take part in the ceremony alongside faculty, staff, and families celebrating the graduates.
Officials say the commencement marks an important milestone, recognizing the hard work, perseverance, and achievements of the Mustang community.
A strict clear bag policy will be in place for those attending in person. Only clear bags will be allowed inside the venue, with backpacks and large purses prohibited.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will move indoors to the Fine Arts Theater, with additional viewing locations available on campus.
