DEMING – Families in Luna County who receive food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will soon notice a change in how certain household expenses are verified, as state officials move to strengthen the accuracy of benefit calculations.
Starting May 1, the New Mexico Health Care Authority will begin requiring documentation of shelter, utility and dependent care expenses when families apply for SNAP or report changes to those expenses. Officials say the goal is to ensure households receive the correct level of support based on their actual costs.
The verification process will include providing records such as lease or mortgage statements, public housing agreements or letters from landlords to confirm housing expenses. Utility costs can be verified with copies of bills or other documents showing responsibility for payment. For dependent care, families may submit agreements with care providers, letters outlining costs and attendance, or similar documentation.
State leaders say the change is part of a broader effort to improve program accuracy and maintain the long-term effectiveness of SNAP services.
Officials stressed that current SNAP recipients in Deming and across Luna County will not experience any immediate disruption to their benefits. Instead, verification will typically occur during the normal renewal process, especially if information has changed, is outdated or cannot be confirmed through existing records.
Families who have trouble gathering documents can contact Health Care Authority caseworkers for assistance. Applicants may also provide names and contact information for individuals who can verify expenses, such as landlords or childcare providers. In limited situations where documentation cannot be obtained, households may submit a sworn statement confirming their expenses.
Residents are encouraged to wait for official renewal notices before submitting paperwork. Documents can be uploaded through a YES.NM.gov account or delivered directly to a local Income Support Division office serving Luna County.
