New Mexico Sees Crime Plummet as Tough Policies Pay Off

DEMING – Crime rates in New Mexico saw notable declines in 2023, with a 6.36% drop in violent crimes and a 3.77% decrease in property crimes, according to a report from the FBI.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the results, attributing the progress to strong policies and partnerships. Despite the reductions, the governor emphasized the need for continued efforts to ensure safety in all communities.

New Mexico’s violent crimes, including homicides, robberies, and rapes, saw significant declines, with homicides dropping by 10.26%.

Property crimes, such as burglary and motor vehicle theft, also fell, with burglary down 13.91%. Public Safety Secretary Jason Bowie credited law enforcement and community engagement for the improvements, while underscoring that more work remains to be done.
