Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Las Cruces

DEMING – The Las Cruces Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning, February 8.

Police say the initial call was received at approximately 7:21 a.m. and involved an officer who was working approved off-duty employment at the Walmart located at 1550 South Valley Drive. According to preliminary information, the officer was flagged down regarding a reported bicycle theft and later located the suspect.

During the encounter, police say the suspect fired at least one round at the officer. The officer returned fire, and the suspect fled the area on foot. Additional officers responded and attempted to establish a perimeter, during which further exchanges of gunfire occurred. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Multiple scenes along and around Valley Drive were secured by responding officers. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities say Walmart on Valley Drive, along with surrounding businesses, may be impacted as the investigation continues. No additional details are being released at this time.

Police anticipate holding a news conference once more information has been confirmed.

The officer-involved incident is being reviewed by a multi-agency task force that includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police. The task force will gather facts and present its findings to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

This remains an active investigation. All individuals involved are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
