Fire Restrictions Take Effect March 27 on BLM Lands in Socorro and Catron Counties

LAS CRUCES – The Bureau of Land Management will implement fire restrictions beginning Friday, March 27, on public lands managed by the Socorro Field Office, including areas in Socorro and Catron counties, in an effort to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.

The restrictions will remain in place until further notice and are designed to limit activities that could spark fires during dry and windy conditions common across central and western New Mexico.

Under the order, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited except in developed campsites or picnic areas. Smoking is also restricted and is only allowed inside an enclosed vehicle or building, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is cleared of all flammable materials.

Officials also reminded the public that possessing, discharging, or using fireworks, pyrotechnic devices, or exploding targets is already prohibited year-round on Bureau of Land Management lands across New Mexico.

Violating the fire restrictions can result in significant penalties, including fines of up to 100,000 dollars and up to 12 months in jail. Individuals found responsible for starting a wildfire may also be required to pay the full cost of fire suppression and any damages caused.

The Bureau of Land Management is asking residents and visitors to cooperate with the restrictions to help prevent wildfires and protect public lands, wildlife, and nearby communities.
